Scrimmages
Confirming
Officials will not be confirming with schools for scrimmages -- but all assignments will be listed on Arbiter so if weather causes a cancellation, officials should be contacted by the AD or coach.
Conducting Scrimmages
New York State has revised its list of scrimmage requirements. The purpose is to have a scrimmage be different than a real game -- Below is a list of the new policy --- all scrimmages must follow these procedures.
Scrimmages in general
- A scrimmage is a practice that is a SIMULATED CONTEST.
- Both squads use the same field simultaneously with both coaches making corrections and giving instructions.
- No official score is kept.
- No admission is charged.
- The use of officials would be permitted and encouraged whenever possible for the purpose of instruction regarding the rules and proper application of rules.
- Starting with the 2014 seasons, officials are paid one-half game fee for scrimmages.
Sport-specific Requirements for Soccer
In scrimmages:
- A soccer scrimmage may not exceed a total of 100 minutes.
- The length of time for the periods of play is to be determined by the coaches, not to exceed 40 minutes in any one period: halves, three periods or quarters.
- Scoreboards may be used for timekeeping only.
- The clock will begin with the goalkeeper in possession of the ball.
- The goalkeeper will have possession at the beginning of all kickoffs in the game -- there will be no mid-field kick off at all for scrimmages.
- When a goal is scored, play will be restarted with goalie possession. The goalkeeper can restart play with a goal kick, throw or punt.
- Unlimited substitutions are permitted for the entire contest.
